Conference Location and Venue:

Mexico City is one of the biggest cities in the world and that makes it a unique place. History, different cultures and a mixture of so many ways of life combine to create what so many of us call home. The city is considered to be one of the most important cultural and financial centers in Latin America. Located in a valley, Mexico City is surrounded by mountains especially the south where the central campus of UNAM is located. Everywhere one goes, there are museums and cultural venues of all sorts such as the National Museum of Anthropology, National Museum of Art, the Palace of Fine Arts, UNAM’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Frida Kahlo’s house amongst others. We also have major archaeological sites such as Teotihuacán and the Templo Mayor, to name some. Mexico City is full of interesting contrasts from colorful markets, precolonial archaeological sites, colonial buildings, modern skyscrapers, a 19th century castle, picturesque neighborhoods, diverse culinary experiences and so on. One can never really know all of Mexico City!

The UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) played an important role in Mexico’s history and society throughout the 20th century and continues to have a key role in society nowadays. The foundation of the University can be traced back to the 16th century making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Latin America. However, UNAM as we know it today was proposed and founded in 1910. With time, it has come to be regarded as the best University in Latin America and it is well renowned globally. UNAM is the largest public university in Mexico with more than 35 schools and faculties ranging from high school, undergraduate, graduate programs, continuing education across and outside of Mexico, as well as various research institutes in all areas of study. Across all campi and all programs offered, UNAM has more than 200,000 students enrolled: high school, Humanities, Science, Social and Political Sciences, Law, Management… there are over 122 majors! The central campus is located in the south of the city; built in the 1950s, some of the iconic buildings and murals were designed by famous architects and painters such as Mario Pani and David Siqueiros in between others. In the central campus, there are about 40 faculties and institutes, museums, important libraries as well as the Olympic Stadium where the 1968 Olympic games were celebrated. In 2007, the central campus was declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Literature, located next to the Central Library at one of the principal entrances to the campus, is one of the most important institutions in Latin America and worldwide in the field of humanities. The community of the Faculty is characterized by its vitality and presence in Mexico’s social movements, political and intellectual life. There are 14 undergraduate courses and 14 graduate courses in the subjects of Pedagogy, Philosophy, Literature, History, Latin American studies, etc., with over 11,000 students enrolled. Its faculty is composed of renowned professors and researchers who contribute to the formation of professionals in humanities as well as other roles in the University.
